Short Sleep and Snoring May Double Type 2 Diabetes Risk in Women with a History of Gestational Diabetes
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication, affecting up to 30% of pregnancies worldwide. Women with a history of GDM face a nearly tenfold increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) later in life. While diet and exercise are well-known preventive measures, our latest research highlights the critical but often-overlooked role of sleep health in mitigating diabetes risk.

Dr. Claire Guivarch, a research fellow at the GloW, has been awarded the prestigious N&G Best Research Award in the Neonatal & Prematurity category for her study on maternal amino acids and fetal growth trajectories. Titled “Plasma Amino Acids in Early Pregnancy and Longitudinal Fetal Growth Trajectories Across Pregnancy,” her research delves into the crucial role of maternal amino acids (AAs) in optimizing fetal growth and underscores the importance of maternal AAs and timing in fetal development. Her research was presented at the 11th International Conference on Nutrition & Growth (N&G 2024) in Portugal and contributes significantly to our understanding of maternal and child health. Charting Long-Term Maternal Health: Dual Perspectives from a Comprehensive Decades-Long Study
On a compelling exploration of long-term maternal health outcomes, our centre’s research —prominently featured in The Lancet and Circulation — emerges from an extended 50-year follow-up study involving 48, 197 diverse women in the US, as part of the Collaborative Perinatal Project (CPP) from the 1950s and 1960s.
Published in The Lancet, our study pinned down a critical association between excessive gestational weight gain and an elevated risk of premature mortality, notably among women with varying pre-pregnancy BMIs. Meanwhile, the paper on Circulation unveils heightened mortality risks tied to pregnancy complications: preterm delivery, hypertensive disorders, and gestational diabetes. Collectively, these revelations underscore the need for prioritizing maternal health and healthy weight gain during pregnancy for long-term well-being and healthy longevity.

Long-term regular coffee consumption and replacement of sweetened beverage with coffee may lower type 2 diabetes
Coffee is a popular beverage worldwide, and coffee consumption is an important lifestyle factor. Professor Zhang Cuilin and her team at the GloW, together with collaborators from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), examined the roles of long-term coffee consumption and subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes among women with a history of gestational diabetes. The team further examined coffee consumption with type 2 diabetes by replacing commonly consumed sugary drinks with coffee. Findings from this study was recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
